On November 15, 2021, The Build America, Buy America Act, or BABAA, was enacted as a part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The purpose of this act is to maximize the federal government's use of services, goods, products, and materials that are produced and offered in the U.S. By using materials produced within the U.S., more jobs are created, supply chains are strengthened, and local businesses are supported, helping to boost the economy.
BABAA requires that all iron, steel, manufactured products, and construction materials be produced in the U.S. when used for federally funded infrastructure projects. This includes everything in the manufacturing process, from the initial melting to the application of coatings.
BABAA covers some federal financial assistance awards. These include grants and loans made after May 14, 2022, that will be used for projects involving construction, alteration, maintenance, or repairs to infrastructure in the U.S. Specific infrastructure projects that are covered include projects with public functions, such as transportation facilities.
